How New York Take-Home Pay Is Calculated
Start with gross pay. Then subtract federal withholding, Social Security, Medicare, New York State withholding, applicable NYC or Yonkers withholding, pre-tax benefits, retirement, PFL or DBL, post-tax deductions, and any extra withholding.

Same income, different location
New York State, NYC and Yonkers Paycheck Comparison
The table reruns the same pay inputs under four local-tax settings. It isolates location withholding but does not calculate another state’s tax or tax credits.
| Location | Per paycheck | Monthly take-home | Use this when |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York State only | $0 | $0 | No NYC or Yonkers local withholding applies. |
| NYC resident | $0 | $0 | You are subject to New York City resident withholding. |
| Yonkers resident | $0 | $0 | Yonkers resident surcharge withholding applies. |
| Yonkers nonresident earnings | $0 | $0 | You earn allocated wages in Yonkers but are not a Yonkers resident. |
How the Yonkers nonresident exclusion works
The official annualized method applies no withholding below $4,000. It subtracts $3,000 from annualized wages above $3,999.99 through $10,000, $2,000 above $10,000 through $20,000, and $1,000 above $20,000 through $30,000. Above $30,000, the 0.50% rate applies without that exclusion.

What Changed for New York Payroll Withholding in 2026?
New York revised the State and Yonkers withholding publications for payrolls made on or after January 1, 2026. The State Tax Department also advises employees who used older IT-2104 worksheets or charts to complete a new 2026 IT-2104 and verify allowances or additional withholding.
The federal side also changed for 2026, including the federal standard deduction and the Social Security wage base. That is why a 2025 calculator should not be reused without updating its inputs.

How New York’s Exact Withholding Method Works
The official NYS-50-T publications calculate withholding from net wages for each payroll period. This calculator annualizes the same logic for planning and uses the annual exact-method schedules.
Use wages subject to New York withholding after eligible payroll reductions and any IT-2104.1 allocation.
For an annual estimate, the 2026 State table begins with $7,400 for single or $7,950 for married, then adds $1,000 for each IT-2104 allowance. NYC uses a $5,000 single or $5,500 married base plus $1,000 per allowance.
The official table gives a lower threshold, a rate, and a base withholding amount. Some rates look unusual because the payroll formula includes benefit recapture.
At the official high-income thresholds, New York switches to a top-income percentage method rather than extending the lower schedule.

IT-2104 Allowances: What 0, 1, 2 or More Means
An IT-2104 allowance is not a dollar credit and is not the same as the modern federal W-4. In the official annual New York tables, each allowance adds $1,000 to the amount subtracted before State, NYC, or Yonkers withholding is calculated.
| Entry | What the calculator does | Practical caution |
|---|---|---|
| 0 allowances | Uses only the official base deduction amount. | Often produces more withholding than a higher allowance count. |
| 1 allowance | Adds $1,000 to the annual allowance subtraction. | Do not assume one allowance equals one dependent. |
| 2 allowances | Adds $2,000 to the annual allowance subtraction. | Use the 2026 worksheet to justify the number. |
| More than 10 | Continues at $1,000 per allowance for planning. | Official tables direct employers to separate deduction and exemption tables. |

How Supplemental Pay Can Be Withheld in New York
If extra pay is combined with regular wages, payroll may calculate withholding on the total. If it is separately identified, an employer may use the applicable supplemental method. These are withholding rates—not final income-tax rates.
| Jurisdiction | 2026 separate supplemental rate | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Federal | Use IRS supplemental-wage rules | The correct method depends on how the employer pays and identifies the wages. |
| New York State | 11.70% | Official NYS publication rate when separately identified supplemental wages use this method. |
| New York City | 4.25% | Applies to applicable NYC supplemental withholding. |
| Yonkers resident | 1.95975% | Resident supplemental withholding rate in the 2026 Yonkers booklet. |
| Yonkers nonresident | 0.50% | Nonresident earnings-tax supplemental rate. |

Hourly, Salary, Biweekly and Semimonthly Pay
Hourly with overtime
Use regular rate × regular hours × paid weeks, then add overtime rate × overtime hours × paid weeks. Unpaid weeks should not be counted as paid workweeks.
Annual salary
Enter base salary, then add expected annual bonus, commission, tips, or other taxable wages. Do not enter a reimbursement unless it is taxable wages.
Biweekly: 26 checks
Most months have two checks, but two months usually have three. A three-paycheck month is not extra annual salary; it is the calendar distribution of 26 checks.
Semimonthly: 24 checks
Pay is usually delivered on two fixed dates. Each check is normally larger than a biweekly check at the same annual salary because there are fewer checks.

Which Payroll Deductions Reduce Which Taxes?
| Deduction | Common treatment | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional 401(k), 403(b) | Often reduces federal and New York income-taxable wages, generally not Social Security or Medicare wages. | Compare federal taxable wages with Boxes 3 and 5 wage bases. |
| Roth retirement | Generally post-tax for income-tax purposes. | Do not enter it as traditional pre-tax retirement. |
| Health, dental, vision | May reduce federal, State, local, and FICA wages under an eligible plan. | Check the employer plan and taxable-wage lines. |
| HSA or FSA | Often pre-tax through payroll when eligible. | Contribution limits and payroll method. |
| Commuter benefit | May receive pre-tax treatment up to applicable limits. | Use payroll deduction, not total commuting cost. |
| Union dues, garnishment | Often post-tax. | Enter the actual per-check amount. |
| NY Paid Family Leave | 2026 employee contribution of 0.432%, capped at $411.91. | Year-to-date PFL amount and employer coverage. |
| NY Disability Benefits | Employer may deduct 0.5% of wages, capped at 60 cents per week. | Employer is not required to deduct it. |

Paid Family Leave
The 2026 employee contribution is 0.432% of gross wages per pay period, with a $411.91 annual maximum. The cap tool above prevents a full-year calculator from continuing the contribution after the cap is reached.

An employer may collect 0.5% of wages but not more than 60 cents per week. The employer may also choose not to deduct it, so a zero DBL line is not automatically an error.

Why Your Real New York Paycheck May Be Different
Employer systems have exact employee records that a public calculator cannot see. Work through the mismatch in this order.

New York Paycheck Calculator FAQs
How much is my paycheck after taxes in New York?
Enter your salary or hourly pay, pay frequency, federal filing status, New York withholding status, IT-2104 allowances, work-allocation percentage, local-tax location, deductions, and extra withholding. The tool estimates take-home pay per check, per month, and per year.
What taxes normally come out of a New York paycheck?
A New York paycheck can include federal income-tax withholding, Social Security, Medicare, New York State withholding, and—when applicable—New York City or Yonkers withholding. Benefits, retirement, Paid Family Leave, Disability Benefits, and post-tax deductions can also reduce take-home pay.
Is New York State tax separate from NYC tax?
Yes. New York State withholding and New York City resident withholding are separate. A New York City resident can see both, while most New York workers outside the city have no NYC resident withholding.
How does Yonkers tax affect a paycheck?
Yonkers residents can have a resident surcharge based on New York State withholding. A nonresident who earns wages in Yonkers can have a separate nonresident earnings-tax withholding calculation. Residence and work allocation matter.
What do New York IT-2104 allowances do?
IT-2104 allowances reduce the wages used in the New York withholding calculation. More allowances generally mean less tax withheld, but claiming an incorrect number can leave you underwithheld. Use the 2026 IT-2104 worksheet rather than guessing.
Does head of household work differently on Form IT-2104?
Federal head-of-household status affects the federal estimate. For New York withholding tables, single and head-of-household employees generally use the single withholding schedule, while married employees use the married schedule.
Can this calculator include hourly pay and overtime?
Yes. Select hourly pay, then enter the regular hourly rate, regular hours, overtime hours, overtime multiplier, and paid workweeks. Overtime is added to gross wages before taxes and deductions are estimated.
What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?
Biweekly pay normally produces 26 checks per year and often creates two three-paycheck months. Semimonthly pay normally produces 24 checks per year, usually on two fixed dates each month.
Why is a bonus paycheck withheld at a high rate?
Employers may combine a bonus with regular wages or use supplemental-wage withholding methods. New York publishes separate supplemental rates for State, NYC, and Yonkers withholding. Withholding on the check is a prepayment and is not necessarily the final tax on the bonus.
Does a traditional 401(k) reduce every payroll tax?
A traditional 401(k) commonly reduces federal and New York income-taxable wages, but it generally does not reduce Social Security or Medicare wages. Qualified health or cafeteria-plan benefits can have different treatment.
How much is New York Paid Family Leave in 2026?
The 2026 employee contribution rate is 0.432% of gross wages per pay period, capped at $411.91 for the year. The calculator keeps both values editable so the page can remain useful if payroll settings change.
Can an employer deduct New York Disability Benefits from pay?
An employer may, but is not required to, deduct 0.5% of wages up to 60 cents per week for Disability Benefits coverage. Check the actual paystub because not every employer deducts it.
Why does ADP or my payroll portal show a different result?
Employer payroll systems know the exact W-4, IT-2104, IT-2104.1 allocation, year-to-date wage caps, benefit tax treatment, payroll date, supplemental wages, and rounding. This page is a transparent planning estimate rather than an employer payroll engine.
What if I work in New York but live in another state?
New York withholding may apply to the portion of services allocated to New York, while your resident state may also require withholding or a return. Form IT-2104.1 can be relevant for nonresidents and allocation, but this calculator does not model another state’s credit rules.
Can this calculator replace official withholding tables or tax advice?
No. It is a planning and budgeting tool. Employers should use IRS Publication 15-T and the official New York State, New York City, and Yonkers withholding publications. Filing, residency, and allocation decisions may require professional advice.
